Jumma Masjid and Cannon, Historical mosque with cannons at Uparkot Fort, Junagadh, India
Jumma Masjid stands on a brick foundation within Uparkot Fort, with thick defensive walls, an open prayer hall, and a restored terrace reached by stairs. Two large cannons are positioned within the compound.
The mosque was built in 1472 by Sultan Mahmud Begada after he captured Junagadh, using stone from an earlier building called Ranakdevi Mahal. The cannons arrived later from Diu, bringing with them traces of Ottoman-period conflicts.
Two large cannons sit prominently in this compound, reminders of the fort's military past now standing near a place of prayer. Their presence speaks to how warfare and religious life coexisted at this site.
Access is available during daylight hours and stairs to the terrace require careful footing. The open courtyard offers little shade, so visiting in early morning or late afternoon makes the visit more comfortable.
The larger cannon bears Arabic inscriptions naming the ruler who commissioned it from distant lands to the west. This connection links the site to military struggles that unfolded across the Indian Ocean.
