Navghan Kuvo

Navghan Kuvo is an ancient stepwell within Uparkot Fort in Junagadh district of Gujarat. The stone staircase descends about 52 meters through a circular shaft with openings in the walls that allow daylight to reach the lower levels.

The well was constructed around 1026 AD during the reign of Chudasama king Ra Navaghana. It served as a critical water source for the fort, especially during periods of military siege.

The well shows how people in this region collected and stored water for daily use. The design combines practical water storage with craftsmanship visible in every detail of the stone work.

Access is through an arched entrance leading into a forecourt from which the main chamber is reached. The stairway is steep and dark inside, so wear sturdy shoes and bring a light source.

The staircase transitions from straight steps to crosswise steps that spiral around the central shaft. This unusual design allowed people to reach and transport water more efficiently throughout the structure.
