Kolkata railway station, Railway terminus in Chitpur, North Kolkata, India
Kolkata Railway Station is a terminal in Chitpur, North Kolkata, handling over 600,000 passengers daily across six platforms and eight tracks. The modern facility features waiting areas, refreshment stands, and enough space to manage a continuous flow of passengers during peak hours.
The facility opened in 2006 on the site of a former goods yard to relieve overcrowding at Sealdah station. The redevelopment transformed the area into a modern passenger terminal with multiple platforms and facilities for international connections.
The terminal serves as a departure point for trains crossing into Bangladesh, connecting Kolkata with Dhaka through cross-border rail services. Travelers experience the hall with its waiting areas and facilities while trains arrive and depart around the clock.
Shyambazar and Belgachia metro stations are nearby, making it easier to reach the terminal from different parts of the city. Parking facilities are available on site, and waiting areas are located in the main hall near the platforms.
In March 2010, the Maharajas Express, an upscale train offering luxury cabins and multi-day tours across northern India, began its first journey from here. The train provides an unusual contrast to the daily commuter trains serving the terminal.
