Mayong, Mystical village in Morigaon district, India
Mayong is a village in Morigaon district within the state of Assam, stretching along the Brahmaputra through a forested area. The settlement sits roughly 40 kilometers from Guwahati and is surrounded by dense woods that reach down to the riverbank.
Archaeological finds in the area include iron swords and objects from old ceremonies, pointing to rituals practiced over many centuries. Records from the 14th century mention an army of Muhammad Shah that vanished without trace in the surrounding woods.
Experienced healers known locally as Oja or Bez work with copper plates and plants gathered from the surrounding forests during their sessions. These methods have been passed down through families for many generations and remain part of everyday village life.
The local museum displays old manuscripts, tools, and other objects related to the traditional practices of the village. Access is by road from Guwahati through rural areas, taking around an hour of travel time.
Excavations uncovered old iron weapons thought to have been used in ceremonial acts. Accounts from the 14th century tell of an entire military force vanishing in the local woods, never to be seen again.
