The stadium opened in 2017 and was renamed in 2018 to honor former Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. It replaced older cricket facilities and became a modern venue for the sport in northern India.
The venue serves as the primary ground for the Uttar Pradesh cricket team and hosts matches of the Lucknow Super Giants in national competitions.
