Gate of All Nations, Ceremonial entrance hall in Persepolis, Iran

The Gate of All Nations measures 16.5 meters in height and features two parallel doorways made of limestone with a central hall between them.

King Xerxes I ordered the construction of this monumental entrance during his reign from 486 to 465 BCE as part of the Persepolis complex.

The gate displays large sculptured bulls and lamassus, mythological creatures with human heads that served as protective deities in ancient Persian culture.

Visitors enter the archaeological site through the western doorway, following the same path that ancient delegations used when visiting the Achaemenid capital.

Dutch artist Cornelis de Bruijn made the first western drawings of the gate in 1704, initiating a tradition of travelers inscribing their names on its walls.
