Tachara, Royal palace in Persepolis, Iran
The Tachara is a palace structure at Persepolis featuring twin staircases, massive stone columns, and elaborate wall carvings showing figures and ceremonial scenes. The building comprises administrative offices, grand reception areas, and private royal chambers linked together by connecting passages.
The palace was constructed around 500 BCE under Darius I and later modified by successive rulers including Xerxes I and Artaxerxes III. These changes reflect how the empire developed and shifted over generations.
The carved walls display scenes of royal life and religious rituals, showing how ancient rulers presented their power and spiritual role to the people. These visual stories offer insight into the daily world and beliefs of the Achaemenid Persian Empire.
Visiting requires careful exploration of the different rooms and staircases that connect multiple levels and offer varying views of the carvings. Allow adequate time to examine wall details from different angles and to understand how the spaces flow into one another.
The southern entrance stands apart from other Persepolis palaces due to a specially designed bathroom decorated with reliefs showing the king during ritual preparation. This private bathing space is one of the few surviving examples of royal bathing facilities from this period.
