Königspitze, Alpine peak in Ortler Alps, Italy
Königspitze is an Alpine peak standing 3,851 meters high in the Ortler Alps between South Tyrol and Lombardy. Its ridgeline features both technical climbing routes and gentler slopes suited to different skill levels.
The mountain was first documented in 1854, though debate surrounds who actually reached the summit first. These early ascents helped shape Alpine mountaineering in the region.
The peak carries two names reflecting its position between German-speaking and Italian alpine communities. Climbers from both regions share the mountain and its mountaineering traditions.
The approach starts from Santa Caterina di Valfurva, roughly 20 minutes east of Bormio, where parking is available near Rifugio Forni. Come prepared with proper footwear and mountain gear, as route conditions change with the season.
The eastern routes are notably steeper and more technical, with slopes reaching 40 to 45 degrees near the summit. This demanding terrain requires climbing equipment and experience, setting it apart from gentler Alpine paths.
