Santa Maria del Suffragio

Santa Maria del Suffragio is a baroque church in Viterbo featuring a two-level facade of dressed peperino stone with geometric details. The interior contains an elevated octagonal chancel, four marble side altars beside the high altar, and numerous artworks dating from the 18th century.

The building began as a church dedicated to San Quirico in the 12th century and received its present name in 1618 when Cardinal Bishop Tiberio Muti transferred it to a newly formed confraternity. This change marked its transformation into a space devoted to prayer for the deceased.

The church served as a gathering place for a confraternity focused on prayer and fundraising for masses honoring the deceased. This community shaped local religious life for generations.

The interior space is compact and easy to navigate, allowing good views of all altars and artworks throughout. Visit during early morning or late afternoon hours when foot traffic is lighter for a more contemplative experience.

The ceiling displays a painted jute canvas depicting God the Father with Christ and the Virgin in a visual representation of heaven. The walls also incorporate carved heads representing tormented souls, serving as a symbolic reminder of suffering in the afterlife.
