Teatro Unione, Opera house in Viterbo, Italy
Teatro Unione is an opera house in Viterbo with 576 seats arranged across multiple levels and 97 boxes laid out in the traditional Italian theater design. The box seating spans four floors and allows a large audience to attend performances.
Construction began in 1844 under Count Tommaso Fani Ciotti's leadership and the building opened in 1855 with a performance of Verdi's Rigoletto. This inaugural performance marked the start of its role as a major cultural center in the city.
The venue hosts the Fausto Ricci International Singing Competition, which brings together opera singers and judges from the classical music world each year. Visitors can experience the living operatic tradition that defines this space.
The building offers four dedicated spaces for people with disabilities and their companions, making the venue accessible to different visitors. The upper gallery level remains closed for safety reasons.
Following serious damage during World War II, the municipality of Viterbo took full ownership to secure funding for rebuilding. This decision transformed it into a public cultural landmark that continues to shape the city today.
