Nettunia, Former administrative district in Lazio, Italy
Nettunia was an administrative district that merged the coastal towns of Anzio and Nettuno along the Tyrrhenian Sea, located about 60 kilometers south of Rome. The combined territory included both seaside harbors and inland areas in a single unified municipality.
Nettunia was created in 1939 during the Fascist period as an administrative merger of two separate towns that lasted six years. The district was dissolved in 1945 after World War II ended, returning Anzio and Nettuno to independent status.
The merged territory brought together the coastal fishing community of Anzio with the inland agricultural traditions of Nettuno, creating two distinct ways of living side by side.
The two towns today exist as separate destinations that can be explored independently or visited together to understand how they functioned as one district. Traveling between Anzio and Nettuno is straightforward, allowing visitors to compare the character of each place.
The name Nettunia drew inspiration from ancient references to settlements in the region, connecting the modern administrative district to much older territorial divisions. This link to classical geography remains largely overlooked by visitors exploring the area today.
