Ortazzo e Ortazzino is a protected natural area in the province of Ravenna composed of brackish lakes, reed beds, and wet meadows. The landscape consists of two distinct parts, with the coastal section featuring sand dunes and salt marshes, while the inland portion represents a former rice cultivation area now containing freshwater habitats.
The area was historically used for rice cultivation before transitioning to nature protection status to preserve biodiversity. Designation as a Natura 2000 site represented a turning point where the focus shifted from economic use to conservation management.
The name Ortazzo refers to the historical rice paddies that once defined this landscape, now transformed into reed beds and brackish wetlands. Today visitors can observe how local migratory bird populations depend on these wetlands as essential resting places during their seasonal journeys.
Visitors should wear comfortable shoes and stay on marked trails to minimize disturbance to wildlife. Since minimal facilities exist on site, it is wise to bring adequate water and provisions before arrival.
A major wildfire over a decade ago destroyed large sections of the pine forests in the coastal zone, yet nature gradually rebuilds the forest structure. This recovery phase demonstrates how ecosystems retain their capacity for self-renewal even after severe disturbance.
