Ponte Solferino

Ponte Solferino, Arch and road bridge in Pisa, Italy.

Description

Ponte Solferino is an arch bridge crossing the Arno River with four vehicle lanes and sidewalks for pedestrians. Its prestressed concrete structure spans 101 meters and rises 10.5 meters above the water.

History

Construction began in 1972 and the bridge opened to traffic in 1974, representing a significant step in modernizing Pisa's transportation links. This addition helped connect the city's northern and southern districts more efficiently.

Culture

During the Luminara festival each summer, this crossing becomes a gathering point where visitors line the sidewalks to watch thousands of candles flicker across the riverside buildings below.

Practical

The bridge is open daily to both vehicles and pedestrians crossing between the river banks. Walking across on foot offers the best way to enjoy views of the Arno and take in the surroundings without traffic stress.

Did you know?

The bridge's main span stretches 48.6 meters, showcasing advanced prestressed concrete techniques that were innovative for the 1970s. This engineering solution allows the structure to cross the river without intermediate supports in the water.
