Higashiizu, town in Kamo district, Shizuoka prefecture, Japan

Higashiizu is a small town in Kamo district on the east coast of the Izu Peninsula, situated between the Amagi Mountains and Sagami Bay. It features hot spring facilities, a fishing port where fresh catch arrives daily, beaches for surfing and relaxation, and the Izu Animal Kingdom as a family attraction.

The town developed as a fishing community that later prospered through natural hot springs, which drew visitors seeking therapeutic bathing. The area became established as a spa destination with traditional bathing culture that continues to define the town today.

The name Higashiizu means East Izu, referring to its position on the eastern side of the peninsula. The town maintains its character through hot spring culture, where visitors bathe in outdoor pools overlooking the ocean and experience traditional Japanese hospitality at family-run inns.

The town is best reached by train or car and sits on the route to Kawazu and Shimoda, making it easy to include as a stopover during a larger trip. Most activities center on the beach and hot springs, so wear comfortable shoes and bring bathing clothes.

A striking phenomenon occurs in the early morning hours when moonlight reflects on the ocean to create a shimmering path across the water, known locally as the moon road. This fleeting moment draws photographers and those seeking quiet moments with nature.
