Ferris University, Private women's university in Yokohama, Japan.
Ferris University is a private women's university in Kanagawa Prefecture that operates across two separate locations. The Ryokuen campus sits in Izumi-ku, while the Yamate campus in Naka-ku district serves exclusively as the home for music degree programs.
American Presbyterian missionaries founded the institution in 1870 initially as a seminary for training women. Recognition as a university came only in 1965, nearly a century after its establishment.
The campuses reflect different academic traditions, with the music facilities housed in a neighborhood known for its international history and hillside character. Students move between residential streets lined with older buildings and practice rooms where rehearsals fill the air throughout the day.
Entry as an international student requires preparing certain documents that should be checked in advance. Visiting the campus grounds is possible, with the Yamate location situated on a hill and reachable on foot.
The music department emerged only in 1989, more than a century after the founding of the original institution. It includes degree tracks for vocal performance, instrumental training, and musicology, all housed at the separate Yamate location.
