Rokko Alpine Botanical Garden, Botanical garden in Mount Rokko, Kobe, Japan.
Rokko Alpine Botanical Garden is a botanical garden on Mount Rokko in Kobe, Japan, sitting at around 865 meters elevation and devoted to plants from alpine and cold-climate regions. The garden is divided into different sections, each arranged to reflect the natural growing conditions of the plants displayed there.
The garden was founded in 1933, making it one of the oldest mountain botanical gardens in Japan. In 1955 it received official recognition that confirmed its role in plant study and nature education.
The garden displays native Japanese plants that are more commonly found in colder northern regions, such as skunk cabbage and alpine primrose. Visiting at different times of year shows how noticeably these plants change with the seasons.
The garden is open from March through November, and since mountain weather can change quickly, wearing sturdy shoes and bringing a layer for wind or rain is a good idea. Access from the base of the mountain is by cable car or shuttle bus.
Mount Rokko lies far south of Hokkaido, yet its elevation naturally creates temperatures close to those of southern Hokkaido, letting plants grow here that would not normally survive this far south. This means visitors can encounter northern species without traveling to the far north of Japan.
