Rokko Morinone Museum, Mountain sound museum in Nada-ku, Japan
Rokko Morinone Museum is a music museum located on Mount Rokko in Nada-ku, Kobe. The building has European architecture and houses automatic musical instruments alongside sound installations that explore how nature and sound connect.
The museum started as the Rokko International Musical Box Museum focused on mechanical music boxes and automatic instruments. In 2021 it changed direction to emphasize the connection between the natural world and sound.
The collection features automatic musical instruments from Europe and America made in the 1800s and early 1900s. These pieces reflect how people from different countries valued sound and music in their homes.
The museum is open from morning until mid-afternoon on most days and sits on a mountain with accessible pathways throughout. Comfortable walking shoes help when exploring both the indoor exhibits and the outdoor garden areas.
The SIKI Garden features a walking path where visitors encounter sound installations while exploring plants that change with the seasons. Hammocks placed throughout the garden offer spots to rest and listen to the forest.
