上芽室信号場, Railway signal station in Hokkaido, Japan
Kamimemuro signal station is a railway control point on the Sekisho Line in Hokkaido with two parallel tracks that allow trains to pass simultaneously in opposite directions. The facility manages train traffic without any passenger boarding or alighting.
This control point opened in 1965 and began operations in 1966, initially serving the Nemuro Main Line. In 2024, it transitioned entirely to the Sekisho Line when portions of the original route ceased service.
The signal station represents Japanese railway engineering excellence, integrating centralized traffic control systems from its initial construction phase.
This facility is located in a remote area of Hokkaido and is mainly of interest to railway enthusiasts since no regular passenger service operates here. Visitors should research access and local conditions beforehand, as it is purely an operational control point.
The station will transition to exclusive Sekisho Line operations in April 2024 when sections of the Nemuro Main Line cease operations.
