Mount Kentoku, Mountain peak in Yamanashi, Japan
Mount Kentoku is a mountain in Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan, rising to about 2031 meters (6663 feet) above sea level. It sits in the eastern part of the Japanese Alps, with forested slopes giving way to rocky terrain closer to the summit.
Mount Kentoku came to wider attention in the early 20th century as hiking became popular across Japan. The trails and basic facilities around the mountain developed gradually from that point onward.
The name Kentoku comes from a Buddhist term, suggesting the mountain has long held a spiritual role in this part of Yamanashi. Small stone shrines placed along the trails are still visible today and reflect that older connection.
The approach to the mountain starts near Enzan, which is reachable by train, and the full hike takes around four hours. Sturdy footwear and enough water are important, as the upper sections involve rough, rocky ground.
Metal chains are bolted into the rock on the steepest sections just below the summit, helping hikers pull themselves up. On clear days, the top offers a direct view of both Mount Fuji and the Minami Alps at the same time.
