Jukkokutōge Cable Car, Funicular railway in Kannami, Japan
Jukkokutōge Cable Car is a funicular system in Kannami, Japan, that carries passengers along a 316-meter track from the base station to the summit station on Mount Jukkokutoge. The upper station sits at 766 meters elevation and offers open views over the surrounding mountainous terrain.
Operations began in 1956 using equipment previously operated by Myoken Cable Railway before it ceased running during World War II. Reusing the machinery allowed for a faster launch and connected the summit to the valley below.
Passengers can stand at viewing platforms where traditional territorial boundaries once divided the landscape into ten provinces, as the mountain's name suggests. This ancient system shaped how communities organized their daily affairs and understood the surrounding territory for centuries.
Cabins depart every 15 minutes and the ride to the summit takes 3 minutes. Combined tickets cover bus connections from Hakone as well, allowing travelers to use multiple forms of transport.
Since December 2023, this is the only standard gauge funicular system in Japan after Nose Electric Railway stopped running. This technical detail makes it a rare example of its kind across the country.
