Mibumachi Toy Museum, Toy museum in Mibu, Japan
The Mibumachi Toy Museum is a toy museum in the town of Mibu, in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan, housed in a building designed to resemble a castle. The collection spans several floors and covers toys from different periods of Japanese history as well as from other countries.
The museum opened in 1995 as part of a local initiative to bring visitors to Mibu and support the town's economy. It was one of the first museums in the Tochigi region to focus entirely on toys and play.
The museum shows toys that accompanied generations of children in Japan, from simple wooden tops to elaborate dolls from the Edo period. Walking through the rooms gives a clear sense of how childhood and play have changed in Japan over time.
A visit works for any age, but families with children tend to get the most out of it, as many exhibits invite hands-on interaction. It is worth setting aside more time than you might expect, since the collection across all floors takes a while to move through.
The museum has two model railroad dioramas with working trains that run on a regular schedule for visitors, set against detailed miniature landscapes. These moving displays tend to draw as much attention as the toy collection itself, from adults as much as from children.
