Mibu Castle

Mibu Castle is a medieval fortification in Mibu featuring two concentric moats, earthen ramparts, and a central bailey that served as the main palace area. The site encompasses several zones where different functions of the stronghold once operated.

The fortress was founded in 1469 and remained under the control of the Torii clan throughout its history. The family maintained its authority over many generations until the Meiji Restoration ended the old order.

The name reflects the families who held power here for centuries, and the remaining structures show how daily life unfolded within a medieval fortification. Visitors can still observe how different areas served distinct purposes in the past.

The site is accessible via local transportation, and visitors should expect uneven ground and some overgrown areas throughout the ruins. Several original gates were relocated to different locations across Tochigi Prefecture and can be visited separately if interested.

Unlike typical Japanese fortifications, this stronghold lacked a central tower or watchful towers, making it unusual in its defensive layout. This departure from standard design reveals the distinctive building approach and defensive thinking of the local era.
