Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall

Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall is an octagonal three-story building in Hyogo Prefectural Maiko Park that houses exhibits about modern Chinese history. The structure contains display rooms that document the life and influence of a major Chinese revolutionary leader.

A wealthy Chinese merchant from Kobe built this structure in 1915 when the city was an important port community for Chinese migrants. Decades later, it opened as a museum in 1984 and eventually received designation as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.

The hall displays personal belongings and photographs of Sun Yat-sen, showing how this Chinese revolutionary lived while in Japan. Visitors can see objects that reveal his daily life and the connections he built with people in Kobe.

The building sits within a park setting and is about a ten-minute walk from Maiko Station on the subway. It's best visited during daytime hours, and comfortable shoes are helpful since exploring the surrounding park area is part of the experience.

The structure combines Chinese architectural features with Japanese craftsmanship in a way that was uncommon when it was built. This unusual blend of both styles makes it visually distinct from other buildings in the area.
