Former Kinoshita House, Traditional residence in Maiko district, Japan
The Former Kinoshita House is a traditional wooden residence in Maiko with a main story and partial upper floor that preserves the spatial layout of a mid-20th-century Japanese home. Visitors can observe the room arrangements, building materials, and interior details that reflect residential life from that era.
The house was built in 1941 and acquired by the Kinoshita family in 1952 as their residence. In 2000, the family donated it to Hyogo Prefecture, ensuring its preservation as public property.
The house reflects sukiyazukuri architectural style, with its original garden creating a natural connection to the adjacent Maiko Park that you can experience as you walk through.
The residence is easily accessible on foot from nearby transit and welcomes visitors during standard daytime hours. Visiting in the morning or early afternoon allows you to explore the rooms with fewer crowds and a more relaxed pace.
The house survived the 1995 Hanshin-Awaji Great Earthquake without damage, making it one of the few preserved residential structures from that era. Its survival stands as a testament to the resilient building techniques of traditional Japanese wooden construction.
