山之村牧場, Mountain ranch in Hida, Japan
Yamanomura Ranch is a cattle farm located in the mountains of Gifu Prefecture at roughly 3,300 feet (1,000 meters) elevation, where Jersey cows are raised. The property includes facilities for processing milk and meat into various finished products sold on site.
The farm began operations in 2004 through a regional development initiative and went through restructuring in 2008. Following its reopening in 2009 under new local management, the operation took on its present form.
The ranch draws visitors who want to see how dairy products are made from the animals that produce them. This connection between animal husbandry and food creation shapes how people experience the place and understand where their milk comes from.
Visitors can participate in bread making, milking cows, or horseback riding, though these activities require advance booking. The best time to visit is between spring and autumn when all programs operate.
The ranch produces specialty sausages seasoned with black pepper that you would not find elsewhere easily. This uncommon flavor choice emerged from local tastes and the food processing traditions of the region.
