Akashi Port sits along the Seto Inland Sea coast with multiple docks for working fishing boats and passenger ferries serving nearby islands. The layout combines active fishing operations with regular service routes that connect the mainland to surrounding communities.

Before the Akashi Strait Bridge opened, Akashi Port was the mainland terminal for frequent passenger ferries to Awaji Island, including services to Iwaya and Tomoshima. Routes and operators were reorganised when the bridge was built, and falling passenger numbers led to closures; since 19 May 2008, when the Tomoshima route was suspended, only Awaji Genova Line's Iwaya service has remained.

Akashi Port is a ferry terminal: since 19 May 2008 the Awaji Genova Line has been the only service left, running passenger boats between Akashi and Iwaya Port on Awaji Island. Earlier routes to Fukura and other island ports were reorganised after the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge opened and then closed as passenger numbers fell.

The port is reachable within about 10 minutes on foot from Akashi Station, with additional bus connections available throughout the area. Wear comfortable shoes for walking and be aware this is an active workplace where fishing boats operate and staff are working.

Akashi Port is a local port administered by Hyogo Prefecture. Since 19 May 2008, when the Fukujima route was suspended, the only passenger service left is the Awaji Genova Line ferry to Iwaya Port on Awaji Island, a crossing that once had several competing operators before the Akashi Strait Bridge opened.
