業平橋, Reinforced concrete bridge on National Route 2 in Ashiya, Japan
The Narihira Bridge spans the Ashiya River with its solid concrete construction, connecting both sides of the city in Ashiya. The structure displays typical early modern Japanese engineering design with clean, functional lines.
The bridge was built in 1925 to replace an older wooden structure that no longer suited growing traffic demands. Recognition as Civil Engineering Heritage came in 2018 from the Japan Society of Civil Engineers.
The bridge bears the name of Ariwara no Narihira, a renowned Heian period poet who composed verses about cherry blossoms in this region.
The bridge is easily reached via National Route 2 and serves as a key crossing between commercial areas and public facilities. Walking paths are wide enough for pedestrians and cyclists, best used during less busy traffic times.
During the spring season, the bridge area transforms as cherry trees along its sides come into full bloom, creating seasonal patterns.
