Eitai Bridge, Steel arch bridge in Koto, Japan
The Eitai Bridge spans the Sumida River with three segments, featuring a central steel arch span and two steel girder side spans, measuring 185 meters long.
Built in 1698 as a wooden structure, the bridge collapsed in 1807 during a festival, causing 1,400 casualties, before being rebuilt in 1926 after the Great Kanto earthquake.
The bridge appears in numerous traditional Japanese woodblock prints from the Edo period, depicting the connection between the old districts of central Tokyo.
Located near Kayabacho and Monzen-nakacho stations, the bridge connects central Tokyo to the eastern district through six traffic lanes and pedestrian paths.
From sunset until 9 PM, the bridge illuminates in blue and white lights, creating reflections on the Sumida River with Tokyo Skytree in the background.
