Yokogawa Bridge, Steel bridge in Nishi Ward, Hiroshima, Japan
Yokogawa Bridge spans the Tenma River as a steel structure measuring roughly 61 meters long and 13 meters wide in Nishi Ward. Distinctive arch elements and bronze reliefs mark its design and give it a recognizable profile.
The current structure was completed in 1983, replacing an earlier crossing at the same location. It survived damage during the 1945 atomic bombing and became a critical way for people to move through the damaged city afterward.
The railings and supporting pillars reflect early Showa period design choices visible to anyone crossing. Local residents have long recognized these architectural details as part of their neighborhood's character.
The bridge sits near Yokogawa Station, making it easy to reach by train. Several bus routes serve the surrounding area, providing connections to downtown and other parts of the city.
After the 1945 atomic bombing and typhoon damage that same year, the bridge temporarily became the only way to reach the city center. Few visitors today realize how pivotal this crossing was for the city's survival.
