泰平寺, Buddhist temple in Satsumasendai, Japan

Taihei-ji, formally Iozan Shochiin Taihei-ji, is a Shingon temple whose main image is Yakushi Nyorai. Excavations in the grounds show it was founded in 708, when it had a Yakushi-ji-style layout; foundation stones remain in the surrounding area. The present buildings were rebuilt in 1923 with donations from local residents.

In 1587 Toyotomi Hideyoshi used the temple as his headquarters during the Kyūshū campaign and received Shimazu Yoshihisa's surrender there. Fires in 1799 and the 1869 anti-Buddhist persecution destroyed the buildings and most of its treasures; the current structures were rebuilt in 1923 with donations from local residents.

Taihei-ji belongs to the Shingon school and is formally named Iozan Shochiin Taihei-ji; its principal image is the healing Buddha Yakushi Nyorai. The temple's name is also tied to the 1338 rito, a memorial pagoda that Ashikaga Tadayoshi had built here. The grounds preserve foundation stones from an earlier Yakushi-ji-style layout.

Taihei-ji stands in Osyoji-cho, Satsumasendai, in Kagoshima Prefecture. Excavations in the precinct have turned up foundation stones of a 7th-century-style temple layout, some of which remain around the present grounds, so look for them near the rebuilt hall. The current buildings date from 1923, when local donors funded the reconstruction.
