Satsuma Kokubun-ji Remains
Satsuma Kokubun-ji Remains, Buddhist archaeological site in Kokubunchō, Satsumasendai, Japan.
The remains include foundation stones of a pagoda, main hall, and gates spread across 130 meters from north to south and 118 meters from east to west.
Emperor Shōmu ordered the construction of this provincial temple in 741 AD as part of a nationwide network of Buddhist temples following a smallpox epidemic.
The temple complex adopted an unusual layout with a secondary main hall positioned west of the primary structure, following the pattern of Kawara-dera in Asuka.
The archaeological site stands as the Satsuma Kokubunji Ruins Historical Park, accessible by a 22-minute walk from Kami Sendai Station on the Hisatsu Orange Railway.
Archaeological excavations in 1929 revealed roof tiles marked with 'kokubun-ji' inscriptions, confirming the historical identity of these temple remains.
