Satsuma Kokubun-ji Remains, Buddhist archaeological site in Kokubunchō, Satsumasendai, Japan.

Satsuma Kokubun-ji Remains is a provincial temple site in Kokubuncho, Satsumasendai, with foundation stones of a pagoda, main hall, and gates preserved across the grounds. The ruins spread about 130 meters from north to south and 118 meters from east to west within the modern park.

Emperor Shōmu ordered construction of this provincial temple in 741 as part of a national network of Buddhist temples established following a smallpox epidemic. The site became an important religious and administrative center for the ancient Satsuma region.

The temple complex shows an unusual layout with a secondary hall positioned west of the main structure, following the pattern established at Kawara-dera in Asuka. Visitors can trace this distinctive arrangement when walking through the park today.

The archaeological site functions today as the Satsuma Kokubunji Ruins Historical Park with good walkways throughout the grounds. The site is reachable by train and then a moderate walk from the nearest station, making it accessible for most visitors.

Roof tiles excavated in 1929 bore the inscription 'kokubun-ji', confirming the historical identity of this temple complex. These discoveries provided the definitive proof needed to authenticate the site and understand its original purpose.
