Den-en Chofu Gakuen Junior & Senior High School, Mittelschule in Japan
Den-en Chofu Gakuen is a combined junior and senior high school for girls in Setagaya-ku, Tokyo. The facility offers students a continuous six-year education centered on inquiry-based learning, project work, and cross-curricular classes that connect different subjects.
The school was founded in 1926 by Shohei Nishimura, a former ship captain who believed in girls' education after traveling worldwide. This vision established an educational institution that continues to support students in their development today.
The school is named after Den-en Chofu, the affluent residential area where it stands. Today it serves girls who participate in Saturday programs offering about 170 courses across five different areas, allowing students from different grades to learn together.
The school is easy to reach, located about eight minutes on foot from Den-en Chofu station on the Tokyu Toyoko and Meguro Lines. Alternatively, you can walk from Yukigaya-otsuka station on the Tokyu Ikegami Line in around ten minutes.
The school emphasizes Saturday learning with about 170 different courses that allow students to explore abilities and develop interests. Notably, almost half of the graduates go on to study science and math at university, despite many students initially finding these subjects challenging.
