Ishiuchi Maruyama Ski Resort, Ski resort in Minamiuonuma, Japan.
Ishiuchi Maruyama Ski Resort is a ski resort in Minamiuonuma, Niigata Prefecture, with slopes suited to beginners, intermediate skiers, and more experienced riders alike. The terrain covers a range of gentle wide runs and steeper sections spread across several lifts.
The resort opened more than 70 years ago as a small local ski spot and grew over time into one of the better-known winter destinations in Niigata Prefecture. The area around Minamiuonuma already had a long tradition of winter activity before the slopes were formally developed.
The resort sits in a region locals call "Yukiguni," meaning Snow Country, a name that reflects how deeply winter shapes life here. The heavy, wet snow that falls in this part of Niigata is part of what draws skiers back year after year.
Regular shuttle buses connect Echigo Yuzawa Station to the slopes, so no car is needed to reach the resort. Arriving early in the morning gives you a quieter time on the runs before the crowds build up.
The resort shares its borders with Gala Yuzawa and Yuzawa Kogen, meaning skiers can move across three separate ski areas in a single day without returning to a base. This kind of interconnected setup is relatively rare in Japan.
