Akutagawayama Castle, Castle ruins on Mount Miyoshi in Takatsuki, Japan
Akutagawayama Castle is a castle ruin on Mount Miyoshi in Takatsuki featuring earthen ramparts and defensive trenches spread across the mountainside. The remains reveal the layered defensive design typical of medieval Japanese mountain fortifications.
The castle was founded before 1516 by Hosokawa Takakuni and saw multiple changes in ownership over the decades. It was abandoned following Oda Nobunaga's attacks in 1568.
The castle ruins earned recognition as number 159 in the Japan Castle Foundation's selection of Notable Japanese Castles in March 2017.
Access the site by taking a bus from JR Takatsuki Station to Tsukawaki stop, then walking through the surrounding mountains. Wear sturdy shoes as the paths are partly unpaved, and allow time for the climb.
Recent excavations at the main bailey revealed building foundations and fire traces on the mountain summit. These discoveries show evidence of how people actually lived within the fortress.
