遍照寺, Buddhist temple in Okinawa City, Japan
Henjoji is a Buddhist temple located in the Kubota area of Okinawa City that honors Dainichi Nyorai as its principal deity. The main prayer hall is currently being rebuilt and reconstructed.
The temple was founded between 1450 and 1457 by Monk Tsuruo and was moved to its current location following damage during the Battle of Okinawa. This relocation allowed the community to rebuild its spiritual practice.
The temple is part of the Toji Shingon Buddhist school, a tradition that emphasizes esoteric practices and meditation. Visitors can sense this contemplative approach in how the grounds are arranged and maintained.
The temple is situated on Kubota Street and is within a few minutes' walk from Yamato bus stop. Parking is available on the grounds, making it easy to visit at your own pace.
The temple was originally named Manjuji but was renamed Henjoji in 1672 following orders from the Satsuma domain. This name change accompanied a shift in Buddhist practice from the Rinzai school to the Shingon school.
