Tsunoshima Bridge, Bridge in Shimonoseki, Japan
Tsunoshima Bridge is a 1780-meter road bridge crossing the sea in Shimonoseki, linking the mainland with Tsunoshima Island. The white concrete structure runs low over turquoise water and offers pedestrians and cyclists separate paths parallel to the vehicle roadway.
The crossing opened to traffic on November 3, 2000, establishing the first direct road connection to the island. Before that time, residents and visitors reached Tsunoshima only by small ferry boats that depended on weather conditions.
The name Tsunoshima means Horn Island, referring to the shape of the landmass visible from the roadway. Locals use the crossing for daily errands and weekend trips to the beach, while the structure itself has become a photo subject for travelers from across Japan.
Visitors can drive from JR Shin-Yamaguchi Station in about 80 minutes or use the crossing on foot and by bicycle. The clearest views occur in morning hours and during fine weather, when the water shows its most intense color.
Amagase Park with its observation deck sits at the mainland end and allows views of the entire span of the construction. From this point, the white line of the roadway appears like a narrow ribbon between green hills and blue horizon.
