Mara Kannon, Buddhist temple in Tawara Mountain, Nagato, Japan.

Mara Kannon is a Buddhist temple on Tawara Mountain known for its collection of stone phallus sculptures displayed around the main worship hall. The figures, some standing over 3 feet (1 meter) tall, reflect an artistic tradition that has developed over centuries.

The temple was founded in 1552 in response to the death of a young man caught in regional political upheaval. This act of remembrance became a lasting site of spiritual devotion that continues to serve visitors today.

Visitors come here to offer prayers for fertility and marriage, making this a place where personal hopes are expressed through ritual. The temple's connection to the nearby hot spring resort shows how this site serves the spiritual needs of both locals and travelers.

The temple is accessible by bus from Shimonoseki Station, followed by a short walk through the hot spring town to reach the site. Wear comfortable walking shoes since the path involves a short walk from the bus stop and exploring the grounds on foot.

Visitors can purchase ceramic phallus-shaped amulets and prayer tablets designed to bring blessings related to marriage, health, and fertility. These handcrafted objects are popular with pilgrims and serve as personal reminders of their spiritual journey to the temple.
