Motonosumi Shrine, Shinto shrine along the Sea of Japan coast in Nagato, Japan
Motonosumi is a coastal shrine on a cliff overlooking the Sea of Japan near Nagato. A total of 123 red torii gates form a path that runs from the upper edge down toward the sea, framing small stone lanterns and statues along the way.
In 1955 a local resident built the shrine after a nighttime encounter with a white fox spirit. Construction of the red gates began in 1987 and continued gradually until the full row was complete.
The offering box sits on top of the tallest gate beam about four meters above ground level. Visitors toss coins upward and hope they fall through the opening to reinforce their wish.
Public transport does not reach the site directly, so renting a car from Hagi or Shimonoseki remains the most practical solution. The steps and paths are narrow and run over uneven ground, so sturdy footwear helps.
Each of the 123 red gates was funded by a single donor and often carries a small inscription. Together they form a tunnel that winds down the rock face for more than a hundred meters, opening views onto the surf below.
