Kaburai-ji, Buddhist temple in Kita-ku, Japan
Kaburai-ji is a Buddhist temple in the Kita-ku district of Kobe, Japan, featuring curved tile roofs and wooden structures across several connected buildings. The grounds also include open garden spaces that sit between the buildings.
Kaburai-ji was registered as a stop on two pilgrimage routes: the Kobe Thirteen Buddhist Temples circuit and the Settsu Province Thirty-three Temples route. This placed the temple within a regional network of sacred sites that pilgrims have traveled for centuries.
Kaburai-ji belongs to two active pilgrimage circuits, and visitors today can still see pilgrims arriving in the traditional white clothing worn along these routes. The temple sits quietly in a residential part of Kita-ku, where it continues to serve as a gathering point for local worshippers.
The temple is in a residential area of Kita-ku and can be reached by public transport from central Kobe. Comfortable shoes are a good idea since the grounds have several connected pathways to walk through.
Kaburai-ji is one of the few temples in the region that belongs to both pilgrimage circuits at the same time. This means that pilgrims completing each route will pass through the same gate twice, each time for a different circuit.
