Nojimasaki Lighthouse, Lighthouse in Minamiboso, Japan
Nojimasaki Lighthouse is an octagonal concrete tower standing at the southernmost tip of the Boso Peninsula on the Pacific coast. The white structure rises 29 meters and has an observation deck accessible from an internal spiral staircase.
French engineer Léonce Verny designed the original brick lighthouse in 1869, making it Japan's second western-style beacon. The current concrete structure replaced the original to modernize the tower and improve its durability.
The lighthouse belongs to Japan's collection of 50 significant lighthouses and is protected as a registered cultural property. People recognize it as an important landmark that represents Japan's early adoption of Western maritime technology.
You can climb the spiral staircase to reach the observation deck and enjoy views across the Pacific. Clear weather days offer the best visibility and the most rewarding experience from the top.
The beacon sends alternating red and white flashes that can reach ships up to 32 kilometers across the Pacific Ocean. This light pattern helps vessels identify the lighthouse even during dark nights or rough weather conditions.
