Nagano Chausuyama Zoo

Nagano Chausuyama Zoo is an animal facility on mountainous land that houses over 700 animals from 78 species in natural-style habitats. The enclosures use the hilly terrain to create environments that match how animals behave in the wild.

The zoo was founded in 1983 as a celebration of Nagano City's 80th anniversary. Since opening, it has focused on protecting rare animal species and breeding programs for endangered animals.

The zoo centers on the Japanese serow, an animal with deep roots in the country's natural landscape and cultural identity. Visitors encounter how this species is cared for today and its role in the zoo's conservation work.

The zoo is open daily from March through November and operates on adjusted hours during winter months. The hilly terrain calls for sturdy shoes and time to explore, especially if you want to see different areas without rushing.

Red pandas have dedicated indoor and outdoor areas near the north entrance where visitors can watch their everyday behavior. This setup lets people observe these shy animals in a calm setting without disturbing them.
