久具都比賣神社

久具都比賣神社, Shinto shrine in Japan

Kudzu-zuihime Shrine is a Shinto shrine in Watarai dedicated to water deities Kudzu-zuihime and Kudzu-zuihiko, located near the Miyagawa River. The structures follow the Shinmei-zukuri style with simple wooden construction, and the grounds are dominated by an ancient cryptomeria tree with a trunk circumference of about 7 meters (23 feet).

The shrine is associated with Empress Yamato-hime-no-mikoto, who according to local tradition discovered this location during her search for a site for the Ise Shrine. The place has been rooted in the religious history of Watarai district and revered by the local population since ancient times.

Local residents visit to offer quiet prayers and express gratitude at this shrine dedicated to water deities. The way people use the space reflects a deep connection between the shrine, the river, and the surrounding landscape.

The shrine is quickly reached on foot from the nearest bus stop and lies near the Ise Expressway with good access from the nearest exit. The simple wooden bridge and river access are especially interesting during high water levels, so visiting at different times of year is recommended.

A large rock on the back of the shrine is passed down as the footprint of the goddess and is revered as sacred by locals. The site was once an important ferry crossing, and old residents still remember the ferrymen who crossed the river before a bridge was built.
