Okada Museum of Art, Art museum in Kowakudani, Hakone, Japan
The Okada Museum presents around 450 works of art across roughly 5,000 square meters, concentrating on Japanese and Oriental pieces. The spaces are organized over several floors, grouping objects by period and medium such as ceramics, painting, or lacquer.
The site once held Hotel Kaikatei, which welcomed international guests during the Meiji era when Kowakudani developed its hot springs. The current building opened later in 2013 to display East Asian art.
The collection brings together paintings and ceramic works spanning several centuries of Japanese craftsmanship, showing how motifs like animals and landscapes evolved. Visitors can trace artistic themes that reappear across different periods and regions.
Visitors can reach the building by bus from Hakone Yumoto Station in around 19 minutes, getting off at Kowakuen stop. Admission for adults costs 2,800 yen, and the spacious layout requires enough time for a full tour.
One section houses a foot bath café where visitors can soak their feet in natural thermal water while viewing a large mural of Wind and Thunder Gods. This arrangement combines relaxation with an artwork placed directly in front of guests.
