Jōgan-ji

Jōgan-ji is a Buddhist temple perched on a high hill with views over Sagami Bay and surrounding mountains. A traditional bell and wooden beam mark the entrance, defining the temple's classic appearance.

The temple was founded roughly 800 years ago and originally served as the family temple of the Doi clan. It changed Buddhist school affiliations several times over the centuries, reflecting shifts in regional religious life.

The Shichikido hall displays seven wooden statues depicting Yoritomo and samurai warriors who played important roles in the region's history. These figures help visitors understand how the past remains present in daily worship.

The temple is about 8 minutes on foot from JR Yugawara Station on the Tokaido Main Line and charges no admission fee. Visitors can access the grounds and buildings freely at any time.

An 800-year-old Chinese juniper tree planted by Sanehira Doi stands as the largest of its kind in Kanagawa Prefecture. This ancient tree connects visitors directly to the temple's founding era.
