大乗院

Daijyo-in is a Buddhist temple featuring a garden with a central pond surrounded by walking paths. The design incorporates views of Mount Kasuga and Mount Kōen as key visual elements throughout the space.

The temple was founded in 1087 and originally served as a residence for members of the Fujiwara clan. Its purpose and role changed dramatically during the early Meiji period when it was reorganized.

The garden served as a meeting place where Buddhist monks and visiting nobles could walk among water and stone. Today you can sense how the layout encourages quiet reflection and contemplation.

The temple is walkable from Kintetsu Nara Station and requires a small admission fee for adults. Wear comfortable walking shoes since you will spend time strolling on the garden paths.

Archaeological digs uncovered original garden features buried underground, allowing researchers to understand how it once looked. The restoration work was guided by old paintings created by past monks who lived there.
