Nanzo-in, Buddhist temple in Sasaguri, Japan
Nanzo-in is a Buddhist temple in Sasaguri featuring a 41-meter-long bronze reclining Buddha statue that weighs 300 tons and stands 11 meters tall. The statue serves as the temple's focal point, drawing visitors to experience this distinctive sculpture.
Originally founded on Mount Koya, the temple relocated to Sasaguri in 1899 following tensions with local authorities in 1886. This move marked a turning point in the temple's history and its continued development.
The temple holds sand from each of the 88 shrines of the Shikoku pilgrimage inside the statue, linking it to broader Japanese pilgrimage practices. This connection makes the place a gathering point for those seeking deep spiritual experiences.
The temple is most easily reached by train from Hakata Station with a short journey to the nearest station. From there, it is a short walk to the temple, leaving ample time to explore the grounds.
Inside the reclining Buddha statue rest sacred remains of Buddha and two disciples, received as gifts from Myanmar in recognition of medical aid contributions. These precious relics make the temple a place of connection across cultures.
