西5丁目跨線橋, Railway overpass bridge in Sapporo, Japan
The Nishi 5-chome overpass was a railway overpass across the Hakodate Main Line in Sapporo connecting the northern and southern parts of the city. The structure allowed both pedestrian and vehicle traffic to cross over the railway tracks.
The structure was built in 1932 to solve a long-standing traffic problem in this part of Sapporo. It was modified in 1967 and eventually demolished in 1988 after decades of carrying traffic over the railway line.
The bridge became a meeting point for student groups from nearby institutions who gathered there regularly before World War II. These encounters shaped the social life of the academic communities in the area.
The structure was located near Sapporo Station and provided an essential connection between residential areas and commercial districts. Visitors should be aware that it no longer exists today and can only be found in historical records and old photographs.
Local children turned the bridge into a playground and tested how far their bicycles could coast down the slope without pedaling. This informal play became a memorable part of childhood for many who grew up nearby.
