Benkei Bridge, Concrete bridge in Chiyoda-ku, Japan
Benkei Bridge is a concrete structure spanning the Benkeibori moat in central Tokyo, linking the Akasaka and Kioicho neighborhoods. The bridge combines reinforced concrete with wooden components and serves as a pedestrian crossing over this section of the historic defensive waterway.
This bridge was first built as a wooden structure in Kanda Iwamotocho before being relocated to its present site in 1889. It was reconstructed with reinforced concrete in 1985, giving it the appearance it retains now.
The bridge name derives from the adjacent Benkei moat, forming part of the former Edo Castle's outer defensive system that shaped Tokyo's infrastructure.
This bridge is located roughly 260 meters from Akasaka-mitsuke Station and is easily reached on foot. Access is straightforward, and the location offers good views of the moat and surrounding area.
The structure features a dedicated fishing platform where visitors can rent rods, bait, and boats to explore the historic moat waters.
