仁淀川河口大橋, Bridge over Niyodo River estuary in Tosa, Japan
The Niyodo River Estuary Bridge is a road bridge spanning across the mouth where the Niyodo River flows into the Pacific, connecting Tosa City with Susaki City in Kochi Prefecture. The structure crosses over the wide delta and brackish waters of the river outlet.
The bridge was constructed between 1974 and 1977 and initially operated as a toll road. It was made free to use in 2001.
The bridge area attracts surfers who come year-round to ride the strong waves where the river meets the ocean. It has become a gathering spot for this water sports community.
To reach the bridge, take a bus from Kochi Station or drive, as the nearest stop requires some walking from the town. Visit during clear weather for the best views of the river meeting the ocean and the coastal landscape.
Local fishermen set up temporary tents near the bridge during specific seasons to catch young eels at the river mouth. This traditional fishing practice continues to shape the rhythm of life in the area.
