Aoyama Gakuin Yokohama Eiwa High School
Aoyama Gakuin Yokohama Eiwa High School is a combined junior and senior high school in Yokohama that educates both boys and girls since 2018. The campus sits on a hillside with multiple classroom buildings, a chapel, a theater, and sports facilities including tennis courts and athletic fields.
The school was founded in 1880 by missionary Harriet G. Brittan as Yokohama Eiwa Girls' School to provide education for girls. It relocated to its current hilltop location in 1916, later changing its name during World War II before returning to Eiwa in 1996 and joining Aoyama Gakuin in 1997.
The school badge features a purple and white iris flower with a cross, reflecting its Christian foundation and values of kindness rooted in the founder's missionary work. The daily chapel gatherings and hymns remain central to how students and teachers experience community life here.
The school is most active during school hours when students arrive and move through campus. The best time to visit is during weekday mornings or early afternoons when you can observe student activity, sports practice, and club meetings in action.
The founder, Harriet G. Brittan, was a disabled missionary who devoted herself to teaching after recovering from an accident that affected her mobility. Her personal determination shaped the school's spirit and demonstrates how one person's courage created lasting change for generations of students.
